Plot of the film "The Night House"
Beth Parchin is a New York City schoolteacher who lives in a lake house built by her architect husband Owen. The couple lived a happy married life for 14 long years, until one day Owen shot himself at night. He took a boat and committed suicide in the middle of the lake, leaving an ominous suicide note. After the tragedy, Beth tries to fill the void, but Owen's things constantly remind her of him. Heartbroken, Beth spends her nights drinking and begins to dream of Owen's return in a dream. One morning Beth finds bloody footprints by the lake and suddenly hears a shot. A week later, Beth returns to work to deal with the tragedy, and decides to sell the house to keep her sanity. Collecting things in the house, Beth finds ominous entries in Owen's diary, but, having deciphered their meaning, does not pay attention to them. Later that night, Beth has a dream in which Owen sends her a message and calls her to meet at the house. Shaken by the nightmare, Beth checks Owen's phone. Scrolling through the gallery, she finds a photo of a strange woman who looks like Beth, but is not her. Beth shows a photo to her friend Claire Woodward at school. Claire also thinks that Beth is in the photo, but Beth objects that she doesn't have the dress that the woman in the photo was wearing. Claire convinces Beth that she is struggling with tragedy and thus finds her existence by digging into the past. That same evening, the girls hang out together, and at the bar Beth tells that she feels an unusual presence in the house, possibly a ghost.
