Plot of the film "The Many Saints of Newark"
In the 1960s, various clans of Italian gangsters still completely run New Jersey. Tony Soprano's father did not get out of prison, and his mother Olivia was depressed. Uncle Dick Moltisanti was a real life reference point for the future mafia. The handsome man seemed to have stepped off the cover of a glossy magazine. He did not disdain to deal with African Americans, and they were part of his group. But the married stepson unexpectedly falls in love with a young stepmother Giuseppina, whom his elderly parent brings from Italy. A passionate romance breaks out between them. The hero is torn between the conscientious performance of gangster duties and the Oedipal complex that he feels for his father. Only one person from a large family undoubtedly understands his torment, but a friend is serving a life sentence in prison. At this time, riots break out, caused by the arbitrariness of the police. The guards beat up a black taxi driver. Moltisanti's assistant creates his own gang of African-Americans and does not want to obey the Italians anymore. The area named Newark is predominantly populated by African Americans. They have their own interests and concepts. Ethnic and criminal confrontation escalates into bloody street battles. Taking advantage of the chaos, Dickie commits an impulsive act, which leads to irreparable consequences.
